Horsepower Fantasy Racing: Picks for the STP 500

Race Graphic

There’s legendary speedways in NASCAR, but then there’s speedways that become legends in their own right.  Historical facilities that have seen so many different styles of cars over the years, but the way teams attack the track consistently remains the same.  The track doesn’t change a thing, maybe puts down some new surface in areas, but it doesn’t adjust how teams run the course.

The greats figure out how to win there time, and time again.  Others love to come, but don’t see success.  Some leave their own legacy because of what the drivers receive, and what the fans come for.

This week, NASCAR is at a place that is legendary in the style of racing, the trophy given to the winner, and also what the track is famously know for giving the fans.

Nestled in a small town in Virginia, it’s time to hit the “Paper Clip” at Martinsville.  The track has not changed in how it is raced, because no matter what the year, it was about hard acceleration down the straightaways, but then hard braking to enter the very tight corners.  It means aggression, anger and adrenaline, which often can lead to some intense arguments after the race between drivers.  Just look at last fall when the home-state driver got booed out the door, while the young sophomore he bumped out of the way got cheered as if he was a savior.

The legendary trophy that many drivers want, and some have multiples of, is the grandfather clock.  No other track provides such a unique way to honor the one who successfully made it through all the chaos that racing here provides.

For the fans, although the action is what many love to see, there’s a lot that decide to enjoy the infamous “Martinsville Hot Dog,” topped with chili, onions and slaw to the tune of thousands over the weekend.

But for the League participants, they want a victory before they want to enjoy such a food.  Each are ready for this week, as we now reveal their choices for victory in the STP 500:

Misan Akuya:  Jamie McMurray

It’s been a tough season for McMurray as bad luck seems to be plaguing him a bit.  With Martinsville up next I am sure that he is excited to be able to turn the ship around.  Being one of his strongest teams, a strong run is expected, perhaps a win could be the result.

Rob Blount:  Joey Logano

No reason given.

Billy Fellin:  Denny Hamlin

No reason given.

Ashley Hobbs:  Kyle Busch

It’s Rowdy Nation time!!!!

Ashley Hull:  Denny Hamlin

No reason given.

Klarissa Mitchell:  NO PICK

Deadline passed with no pick submitted.

Dustin Parks:  Chase Elliott

He was so close last year to bringing the No. 24 back to victory, only to find himself getting hammered out of the way before he could realize that thrill of victory.  Instead, he got cheers from the Virginia faithful, while those same faithful decided to let their home-state man in Denny Hamlin know they didn’t appreciate what they witnessed.  He’s out for redemption, and I got a feeling he’s going to get win #1 right here.

Trisha Rodisch:  Chase Elliott

He was oh so close last fall and they need a rebound after last week.

Sal Sigala Jr:  Kyle Busch

No reason given.

Rob Tiongson:  Kyle Busch

I’m going to open up my bag of M&M’s Caramel and go with Kyle.  For my last race as a Bostonian, I want to be Rowdy.

Penny Whitecotton:  Kevin Harvick

No reason given.
