Horsepower Fantasy Racing: Picks for the AAA Texas 500

It certainly was a newsworthy week for the sport, for good reasons, bad reasons, and some that seemed to take on a life of it’s own.  Everyone went from wondering who would make the next round of the Chase, to suddenly talking about one driver that no one expected to gain payback.

Now, that same driver is sitting at home, away from the track, as another member of his team takes the wheel.

Hashtags on Twitter have been created to keep the conversation fresh, while others simply want to put it as a memory and move forward.  Meanwhile, one team has no worries, as they are locked into the final round no matter what happens at this point in the season.

It is becoming a real shootout for the championship, and it is fitting that the next stop for the Eliminator Round is at a place where some shooting happens in victory lane.

Down south is NASCAR in the heart of Texas, where the fan base is known to cheer on the Cowboys and the Rangers, and the Texas Motor Speedway is ready to take on what is sure to be a fight to the finish.  Last year, a fight on pit road took the headline instead of the one who was in victory lane, but after how Martinsville played out, anything is possible when it comes to the final races of this round.

The writers are certainly aware of this, as four of them have picked up a victory.  However, there’s two races left where one of the other two that are competing in this round of action could pick up a win, and that means they could be in position to make it to the next round via a tie-breaker.

Those will be explained once the results from the weekend happen, but can’t think that far ahead without seeing who the field of writers believe will be victorious in the AAA Texas 500:

Misan Akuya:  Carl Edwards

#FreeMatt.

Rob Blount:  NO PICK

No pick sent by deadline.

Mary Jo Buchanan:  Joey Logano

No reason given.

Kara Martin:  Kurt Busch

No reason given.

Ashley McCubbin:  Kyle Busch

Joe Gibbs Racing has been fast on the intermediate tracks and a good run for Busch this weekend could bode well in becoming one of the final four.

Klarissa Mitchell:  Joey Logano

No reason given.

Dustin Parks:  Joey Logano

I can promise you this, no team wants to win this race more than this one.  I can also promise you that if he does, he’ll be booed out of the track like referees after a bad call at a Cowboys game.

Patti Rodisch:  Jeff Gordon

Two consecutive top fives and that includes a win. Their worse finish in the Chase (14th) and only driver who can say that. Gordon will get win number two this weekend in the Lonestar state.

Sal Sigala Jr:  Kurt Busch

No reason given.

Rob Tiongson:  Carl Edwards

I’m thinking it’ll be about flipping time for a Carl Edwards win at Texas. What says you?

Eliminator Round after Martinsville:

Rob Tiongson (4047) Jeff Gordon WON – 5 (1)

Dustin Parks (4047) Jeff Gordon WON – 4 (1)

Misan Akuya (4047) Jeff Gordon WON – 3 (1)

Mary Jo Buchanan (4047) Jeff Gordon WON – 2 (1)

Kara Martin (4039) Kyle Busch finished 5th – 2

Sal Sigala Jr. (4013) Brad Keselowski finished 32nd – 3

Patti Rodisch (2203) Jeff Gordon WON – 5

Klarissa Mitchell (2198) Denny Hamlin finished 3rd – 0

Ashley McCubbin (2155) Jimmie Johnson finished 12th – 1

Rob Blount (2134) NO PICK SENT – 2

Final Remarks:  It is close to the end of the year, and the nights are getting longer.  Some teams are only looking to get a win to show they can get the job done, whether or not the yellow name plate on the car is seen.  Yet for eight others, or at least for another seven, the bigger picture is still within their grasp.

The way to get there is to achieve victory, a guaranteed lock.  If not, it’s simply be faster than the rest of the competition.

Come 3 p.m on Sunday, someone will be victorious, and possibly will be locked into the championship hunt in two weeks.

Summary of Picks:

Joey Logano-3

Kurt Busch-2

Carl Edwards-2

Kyle Busch-1

Jeff Gordon-1
