Horsepower Fantasy Racing: Picks for the Federated Auto Parts 400

It took 26 races to get to this moment.  There’s been joyous moments of victory, ugly moments of defeat, and even changes mid-season in testing out what will work for the next year.

There’s been spooky moments that fans never thought they will see, and fuel tanks stretched to their absolute limits.

Tough wins, dominant performances, and now it comes down to one.

It’s another trip to the Richmond International Raceway, the yearly conclusion to what is considered the regular season in Sprint Cup.  At the end of the night, 16 drivers will know that their quest for the Sprint Cup will begin in the Chase.  But, there’s still duties needing done.  A win could change everything for some drivers, and will knock some out of the way.

Others are locked in, only wanting bragging rights.  But everyone wants one thing, to see the checkered flag first.

The writers are ready, knowing that after tonight, everything changes.  Here’s who they are deciding will get them the final win of the regular season in the Federated Auto Parts 400:

Misan Akuya:  Kevin Harvick

It’s his time to shine.

Rob Blount:  Joey Logano

No reason given.

Mary Jo Buchanan:  Kevin Harvick

No reason given.

Kara Martin:  Kyle Busch

No reason given.

Ashley McCubbin:  Kevin Harvick

No reason given.

Klarissa Mitchell:  Kevin Harvick

No reason given.

Dustin Parks:  Kurt Busch

Heading into this weekend I was leaning towards the hometown man in Hamlin.  But the ACL injury, and even with him saying he’s not missing any time, I’m not as confident in that.  So gonna go with the previous winner this season in Richmond, and the older Busch brother.

Patti Rodisch:  Kevin Harvick

All he does is….finish second but he is a sure lock for a good points day.

Sal Sigala Jr:  Kevin Harvick

No reason given.

Rob Tiongson:  Jeff Gordon

Why not?  It’s a close battle for the lead and I might as well gamble for my fifth win of the year. Also have to think sooner or later that the 92-time race winner finally gets to 93 victories (and counting) down in Henrico County, VA.

Standings after Darlington:

Misan Akuya (824) Kurt Busch finished 6th – 2

Rob Blount (822) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 2

Sal Sigala Jr. (820) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 3

Patti Rodisch (798) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 4

Rob Tiongson (796) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 4

Ashley McCubbin (787) Kyle Busch finished 7th – 1

Kara Martin (781) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 2

Dustin Parks (762) Kevin Harvick finished 5th – 3

Mary Jo Buchanan (715) Jeff Gordon finished 16th – 1

Klarissa Mitchell (702) Jamie McMurray finished 14th – 0

Final Remarks:  The goal of the entire year is to make the Chase, long before the championship.  At this point, 11 spots are locked in for the title hunt, but the grid is far from locked in.  Some could easily fall out, and others could make their way in simply by winning.

There could even be a surprise winner that suddenly takes away one of those spots, and gets the biggest momentum of all.

No matter how it’s looked at, 16 drivers will have their quest for the championship begin.  It will come after 400 miles on NBCSN beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Summary of Picks:

Kevin Harvick-6

Kurt Busch-1

Kyle Busch-1

Jeff Gordon-1

Joey Logano-1
